Ahh, the Charlie Pullover. Chunky cushy Charlie was born of a mission to finish up a basket of red, blue, cyan, and pink yarns of varying textures and thickness. The Charlie Pullover has very wide, ultra-textured sleeves that feature my favourite thick popcorn stitches every fourth row.
The Charlie Pullover begins with the fun mission of deciding on your color palette. Is it going to be the classic red and blue? Pink and green? The adventurous purple and yellow?
After you have your colors, work on the textures. Mohair for fluffy furry bits, a viscose blend for some sheen, a mix of cotton and wool for sturdiness and stretchiness. Mix it up for maximum fun.
The best part of this pullover are the chunky sleeves, so that's how we begin. First we make the sleeves, then we work on the bodice. I made my Charlie Pullover very cropped because I meant to wear it over tight knit dresses, but make your pullover as long as you want them. Finally, the sleeves are sewn onto the bodice.
SKILL LEVEL: This DIY crochet pattern is suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate crocheters. If you know how to crochet how to crochet in the round, and have read a pattern, then you will be able to work with this pattern. You only need the double crochet and the half double crochet, in order to make this top.
SIZING: What you should not expect in this 12 pages long pattern: size charts. Instead, I provide a sizing guide, that explains what you should take into consideration when deciding how to begin and how big to make your yoke. We construct the yoke so that we just need to add rounds till it fits.
YARNS + HOOKS: I would recommend using a Group 4/ aran yarn, so that the top doesn't get too bulky. You should prepare hooks between 5mm to 6.5mm, and be prepared to make a few swatches to see which hook size produces a fabric that drapes and isn't too stiff.
MATERIALS: You would also need a measuring tape, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle.
I learnt to crochet clothes the hard way, through a lot of trial and error, and buying patterns that showed me how to make pullovers that fitted imperfectly, like clothes off a rack. The Charlie Pullover is the latest fruit of all that experimentation: I really want to share with you how a wrap top is crocheted, and how alterations can be achieved.
The Charlie Pullover Crochet Pattern:
- is 11 pages long
- is written in English, and uses US American crochet terminology
- shows you how to choose and adapt the crochet pattern for the type of yarn and size of hook you want to use.
- contains no fixed sizing, but explains in great detail how to adjust the top to fit your own body. I show you how to extend the width and length.
