DIY crochet pattern: Ori ribbed Wrap Top
DIY crochet pattern: Ori ribbed Wrap Top
The Ori Wrap Top is origami magic. We make two ribbed hexagons, fold them, sew them together, add a collar and belt and TA DAH. There are so many options for personalisation! Are you making the Ori in winter or autumn? You can make the Ori Wrap with full length slightly ballooned cuffed sleeves for winter, or you can make it with three-quarter kimono sleeves. Do you wear high-waisted pants or regular waisted ones? The waistband of the Ori Wrap can be made as wide as you wish so that the top doesn't interfere with your preferred pant waist.
SKILL LEVEL: There are no fancy stitches required for this stunning wrap top. It looks more complicated than it is. The Ori Wrap merely alternates front post double crochets with double crochets. The Ori Crochet Pattern is suitable for crochet advanced beginners who know their single crochet, double crochet, magic ring, and who have made at least 2 or three projects and have read patterns. The fancier stitches like the front post stitches and the treble crochet are explained in the stitch guide.
SIZING: The Ori Wrap Crochet Pattern contains no fixed sizing, but explains in great detail how to adjust the top to fit your own body. Because the basis of the Ori Wrap are two folded hexagons, we just make the hexagons as large as we need them. Whichever issue your body presents -- long body, short body, big breasts, fleshy back, big shoulders -- I show you how to extend the length of the top, the width of the front for more chest coverage, and the position of the belt keyhole for a better fit.
Because there is no fixed sizing, you are freed from the tyranny of the gauge and tension square. But, you might want to try making a few swatches to decide on the hook size.
YARNS and HOOKS USED: Choose any Group 4, medium worsted yarn you want, and the hook that goes with it, which will be between 5mm to 6.5mm.
MATERIALS: Other notions you will need are a tapestry needle, stitch markers, and a measuring tape.
I learnt to crochet pullovers the hard way, through a lot of trial and error, and buying patterns that showed me how to make pullovers that fitted like clothes off a rack, since they were made using the same sizing charts. The Ori Wrap is the fruit of all that experimentation: I really want to share with you how a long-sleeved wrap is made, and how alterations can be achieved.
